Pahalgam Terror Attack

United in Grief, Resolute in Spirit: Congress Condemns Pahalgam Terror Attack, Advocates for Justice and Compassionate Support

April 24, 2025 | New Delhi – In a powerful and emotional resolution adopted during a high-level meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the Indian National Congress has unequivocally condemned the cowardly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, which took place on April 22, 2025. This horrific incident claimed the lives of 26 innocent tourists—including three from West Bengal—and left over 20 grievously injured.

Led by senior leaders and echoed by the voices of every corner of the party, the CWC expressed its deepest shock and sorrow at this act of terror that targeted civilians, especially Hindus, with the clear intent to provoke and destabilize. The Congress extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, standing shoulder to shoulder with them in this moment of unimaginable pain.

Congress Leader Advocate Arsalan Khalid emphasized the need for both national unity and compassionate governance. “Our hearts go out especially to the families of the three victims from West Bengal. I strongly urge the West Bengal government to extend full support—financial, institutional, and emotional—to these families. Let us rise as one nation, and one people, beyond politics.”

A Plea for Support: From Words to Action

Advocate Khalid also laid out a compassionate appeal to ensure these grieving families are not left to navigate this tragedy alone. He called upon the state administration to:

  • Offer government jobs to one eligible member from each bereaved family.

  • Provide adequate financial compensation to help stabilize their lives.

  • Ensure the children of these families are supported with free education, healthcare, and other essentials.

  • Develop a sustainable long-term support plan tailored to the needs of each affected family.

These recommendations, he stressed, are not just measures of aid but essential acts of national responsibility.

Terrorism Cannot Divide Us

The Congress Working Committee firmly stated that this calculated act of terror—masterminded with foreign complicity—was not merely an attack on individuals, but on the values and ideals of the Indian Republic. While appealing for national calm and restraint, the CWC reaffirmed its unwavering resolve to confront cross-border terrorism with unity, determination, and moral clarity.

“The deliberate targeting of Hindus was intended to fracture our society. We must not let it succeed,” the resolution stated. “Now more than ever, we must stand together, not divided.”

Questions Must Be Asked, Accountability Must Follow

The CWC expressed grave concern over the failure of intelligence and security apparatus in a region as sensitive and heavily guarded as Pahalgam. In the larger public interest, it has demanded a full and transparent inquiry into the lapses that enabled such a tragedy within a Union Territory directly administered by the Union Home Ministry.

Furthermore, the upcoming Amarnath Yatra—a pilgrimage that draws lakhs of devotees—must be treated as a national security priority. The Congress has called for immediate enhancement of security measures to safeguard not just the pilgrims, but also the livelihoods of countless local citizens who rely on tourism.

Honour and Heroism

In a moment of solemn respect, the CWC paid tribute to the selfless bravery of local ponywalas and tourist guides, one of whom sacrificed his life while protecting tourists. “They embody the true spirit of India—where courage, service, and unity shine through even in the darkest hour.”

Unity, Not Division

Lastly, the Congress strongly criticized attempts by BJP-aligned social media handles to politicize the tragedy for narrow gains. “At a time when India should stand united in grief, it is tragic to see the ruling party stoking polarization. This is not just insensitive—it is dangerous,” the resolution noted.

Conclusion

As the nation mourns, the Congress remains firm in its commitment: to fight terrorism, to uphold the spirit of India, and to care for every family affected by this brutal act. As Advocate Arsalan Khalid poignantly remarked, “Terrorism may take lives, but it cannot break the soul of this country. Let our response be one of strength, support, and unshakable unity.”
